Description

Canada’s Great Trail runs from one end of Peterborough County to the other, but it’s only one link in the network of bicycle paths and tracks that make this area legendary among cyclists of all abilities. From Lakefield, we’ll ride west across the southern Kawartha lakes as far as Lindsay, before cruising along rail trails through the city of Peterborough and back up the Trent-Severn Waterway. Head south, and we’ll roll up and down hills that make riders squeal with glee. With an intentional “wrong turn,” we’ll visit the mill and pond in the village of Lang for the perfect Instagram post, then take a riverside gravel road back to avoid the hills. For bolder riders, it’s a roller-filled trek to Havelock for delicious sandwiches on freshly-baked bread. After the ride, we’ll refuel on a patio in Lakefield or Peterborough, before we fall into bed at the Village Inn.

Where you'll stay

Sitting in the heart of the quaint village of Lakefield, the Village Inn is a charming country inn just a stone’s throw from the historic Trent-Severn Waterway. Lakefield itself is a village in transition. Within a short walk of the Inn, you’ll find everything from old-school diners and bakeries to chic coffee houses and brew-pubs. Accommodations at the Inn are simple, yet modern - and with only 32 rooms, it’s definitely cozy. An evening here will almost certainly include a beer on a patio and a stroll down by the water. If you’re not keen to retire when they roll up the streets, then Peterborough is only a 15-minute drive away, with plenty of great restaurants and pubs.

For Non-Cyclists

Non-cyclists will love Peterborough County’s main street. Every shop seems to have its own unique identity. Right across from the hotel is a combination bakery/bookstore/knit shop. (“My three favourite things,” exclaimed one cyclist’s wife.”) There’s a gourmet grocery store and another shop simply called “Stuff.” The surrounding area offers the same sort of curios offerings: boutique lavender and candle shops, chocolatiers, glassworks - even a potbelly pig sanctuary!

Please Note: Gravelocity’s tours run rain or shine. That said, we reserve the right to alter routes, distances or start times to avoid the worst of what Mother Nature (or the local gravel graders) may throw at us. On the rare occasion that a day’s bike ride is cancelled altogether, we’ll welcome you back on any other day - at any location - to make up for it.
